Hello, NYSF Community!

We have some thrilling news that not only aligns with our mission of promoting sustainable fashion but also connects deeply with our own journey. House Representative Chellie Pingree has officially launched the Slow Fashion Caucus, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry.

Watch the launching event:

For those of us at the National Youth for Sustainable Fashion (NYSF), this moment is particularly special. Rep. Pingree’s speech on Capitol Hill about the devastating cost of fast fashion to our planet was a profound inspiration for the making of our award-winning documentary short film, "Threads of Change." This film, which won first prize at the C-SPAN national competition and was nominated for screening at the All American High School Film Festival, features Rep. Pingree’s passionate words, seamlessly integrating her speech into the narrative to underscore the urgency of the slow fashion movement.

But that’s not all—this journey has been a collaborative effort. Lisa Pahel, policy advisor from Rep. Pingree’s office, played a crucial role in connecting us with Dr. Nikki Roy in Rep. Casten’s office. This connection was instrumental in the creation of NYSF, giving us the support and guidance needed to turn our vision into a reality.

The launch of the Slow Fashion Caucus represents a powerful step towards creating a more sustainable and responsible fashion industry in the U.S. It’s about making fashion that lasts, rather than contributing to the cycle of fast fashion that is so harmful to our planet.

As youth leaders and activists, it’s important for us to recognize the significance of this moment. The formation of this caucus means that our voices are being heard and can be aligned with the highest levels of government. It’s an affirmation that the work we’re doing—through our clothing swap events, Zerobé app, and climate action films—is not just a grassroots movement but part of a larger national conversation.

Let’s continue to push for a fashion industry that values people and the planet over profits. Stay informed, stay engaged, and most importantly, stay inspired. Together, we can build a future where fashion is a force for good.

Warmly,

Brendan Giang
